<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved handset-type transceiver for hearing-impaired persons, and a method of processing audible information for persons afflicted with predetermined types of hearing impairment. <P>SOLUTION: A passive device, in the form of an inductor (39) wound about a highly magnetostrictive core, is connected with a speaker (33) in a handset-type transceiver. The device has been found to improve intelligibility of speech delivered by the handset-type transceiver, when perceived by persons afflicted with certain types of hearing impairment.
