PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To always maintain a good image quality and suppress an increase in printing time and increase in an ink consumption amount to minimum levels. SOLUTION: Before printing in a back direction, total printing time required for back and forth printing for which wait time is taken into consideration is calculated. In accordance with the time, whether preliminary discharge is to be carried out before back and forth printing and standby preliminary discharge is to be carried out is determined.
