PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the chipping or cracking of a ceramic honeycomb structure in handling by preliminarily fixing the ceramic honeycomb structure prior to catalyst support into a metal case through a retaining member. SOLUTION: This canning structure 20 comprises a ceramic honeycomb structure 10 prior to catalyst support preliminarily fixed into a metal case 11 through a retaining member 13. In the canning structure 20, the metal case is formed into a push-in structure, so that the surface pressure distribution in canning is uniformized to enhance the reliability of the ceramic honeycomb structure 20. The bulkhead thickness in the ceramic honeycomb structure 20 is set below 0.10 mm to reduce the heat capacity of a catalyst carrier, so that the temperature rise of the catalyst carrier can be hastened, and the reduction of engine performance by pressure loss and be also prevented. As the retaining member 13, a non-expansible ceramic fiber mat is used to reduce the maximum bearing in canning by the unevenness of diameter of the ceramic honeycomb structure 20, so that the breakage of the ceramic honeycomb structure in heating can be prevented. |
