PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the amount of calculation in a process for estimating incoming wave number from received data of incoming waves from a target. SOLUTION: An apparatus for estimating incoming wave number comprises a simple determination unit placed bypassing a covariance matrix generating unit, an eigenvalue calculation unit and a threshold value determining unit, and determining whether or not change of next incoming wave number will occur based on target data calculated from previous incoming waves and obtained at a target data calculation unit. The simple determination unit lets a processing system for estimating incoming wave number estimate next incoming wave number when the simple determination unit determines the change will occur. When it determines the change will not occur, on the other hand, it stops the next estimation process of the processing system for estimating incoming wave number. In that case the simple determination unit outputs the previous incoming wave number to the target data calculation unit as the next incoming wave number. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
