The mattress is supported on an array of flexible laths (1) secured onto the bed frame at the edges and braced by sliding supports (5) whose lower ends locate in ratchet grips (3) in the top of a shaped bar (4) on a support bar (2) fitted between the bed frame. The user moves the slides to set the tension under the mattress and to change the contour of the support. Each slider moves between two laths and grips the two laths. For additional adjustment each slider can be fitted with individual height adjustment. The sliders are held in their ratchet positions through the flexibility of the laths. The number of sliders used depends on the support/adjustment requirement.
