The cell culture apparatus according to the present invention has a measurement position specifying unit, an image processing unit, and a subculture timing determination unit. The measurement position specifying unit specifies a measurement position in a culture container. The image processing unit calculates a confluent rate which is the ratio of the surface area occupied by cells in an observation image of the position specified by the measurement position specifying unit. The subculture timing determination unit determines the timing of a subculture in the culture container on the basis of the confluent rate calculated by the image processing unit. More specifically, the subculture timing determination unit determines the subculture timing on the basis of a first threshold value with respect to the average value of the entire measurement area in the observation image and a second threshold value with respect to at least one measurement area in the observation image.
