To provide an antiviral agent having higher antiviral activity compared to a conventional ammonium salt. The antiviral agent is characterized by containing at least one type selected from phosphonium salts represented by general formula (1) and hydrolysis condensates thereof. General formula (1): (In formula (1), R1, R2, and R3 are linear or branched alkyl groups having 1-18 carbon atoms. R1-R3 may be the same group or may be different groups. R4 is a linear or branched alkyl group having 1-18 carbon atoms, or an alkoxysilyl group represented by general formula (2). X- is an anion group.) General formula (2): -(CH2)n-Si-(OR5)3 (2) (In formula (2), n is an integer of 1-8, and R5 is a linear or branched alkyl group having 1-5 carbon atoms).
