<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an outboard motor which is reduced in overall volume by well arranging, with excellent space efficiency, a valve operating characteristic selector on an engine contained in the restricted engine room of the outboard motor, has simplified oil passages, is easily manufacturable, and is also reduced in cost. <P>SOLUTION: The outboard motor comprises: an intake valve and an exhaust valve installed in the cylinder head 56 of the engine 50 contained in the engine room A; a camshaft drivingly opening and closing the intake valve and the exhaust valve generally vertically arranged in the cylinder head; and the valve operation characteristic selector changing the operating characteristics of at least one of the intake valve and the exhaust valve.
