A telecommunications link (DIALTAN) from a terminal (ISURF) to a database server (DB) is used for an amount of money to be paid by a customer, and transmission of one or more data packets (payment) to the terminal. The terminal connection is closed and the service request and data packets are sent to the service provider server via an Internet connection. Lastly the service is transmitted to the terminal. Payment packets are stored on the hard- drive of a customer and act as a virtual purse or wallet. Acquisition of the payment packets is a separate process to using them to pay for a service.
