PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect an overloaded vehicle, without having to use a means for specifying the vehicle, and a storage means for storing the data of an allowance live load. SOLUTION: This detection system/method is provided with axle load sensors 11, 21 arranged on a road face, axle load measuring parts 14, 24 for measuring an axle load and the axle number of the traveling vehicle 10, based on detection outputs from the axle load sensors 11, 21, and a road side control part 15 for comparing the axle load ratio (=(axle load in a rear axle)/(axle load in a front axle)) of the traveling vehicle 10 with a prescribed threshold, when the axle number measured by the axle load measuring parts 14, 24 is two (biaxial) or more, and for determining that the traveling vehicle 10 is the overload vehicle, when the axle load ratio is more than the threshold.
