<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium in which further high recording density is made possible, and to obtain an information storage apparatus on which the magnetic recording medium is mounted. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium includes a disk substrate 201 made of glass, an amorphous soft magnetic layer 202 formed by using a Co alloy to be a soft magnetic material, an underlayer 203 made of a Ni alloy, an intermediate layer 204 made of Ru, a nonmagnetic granular layer 205 that includes a granular structure in which a plurality of nonmagnetic grains made of Co-Cr to be a nonmagnetic material are separated from one another by a Cr<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, a recording layer 206 formed on the nonmagnetic granular layer 205 and having a granular structure in which a plurality of magnetic grains made of Co-Cr-Pt to be a magnetic material are separated from one another by TiO<SB>2</SB>to be a nonmagnetic material and a protective film 207 formed by using a diamond like carbon (DCL).
