PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect the thickness of a single sheet in a sheet detecting device usable for an image forming device for outputting printing information such as a copier, a printer, a facsimile device and a printing machine. SOLUTION: This sheet detecting device 100 has a laser irradiating means 502 irradiating the loading surface of a sheet bundle with a laser beam, and an image sensor 503 detecting an image of an interference mode obtained from the loading surface of the sheet bundle to which the laser beam is irradiated by the laser irradiating means 502, and also has an image processing means 504 applying image processing for discriminating the thickness of a sheet to the image of the interference mode detected by the image sensor 503, and a CPU 501 discriminating the thickness of the sheet on the basis of an image processing result of the image processing part 504.
