PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide ingredients suitable for liquid crystal media. SOLUTION: The present invention provides furochroman derivatives represented by formula I (wherein >Y<SP>1</SP>-Y<SP>2</SP>- represents >CH=CH- or >CH-CH<SB>2</SB>and L<SP>1</SP>and L<SP>2</SP>represent each mutually independently H, a halogen, -CN or -CF<SB>3</SB>) and a liquid crystal medium containing these compounds and the use of the medium in an electrooptical display, particularly VAN (virtically aligned nematic) LCD.
