<p>The method involves sampling a signal characterizing a rail pressure. A time-discrete signal is transformed into a frequency chamber. A characteristic extraction is carried out from a frequency spectrum. A characteristic vector is detected and compared with a corresponding stored characteristic vector determined previously. The functioning of an injector (131) is characterized accordingly. A deviation of the injected quantity is suggested due to falsely designed injector. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a computer program; and (2) a computer program product with a program code.</p>
