PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a defect detecting mechanism for a sheet bending machine capable of detecting bending defect of slips or a phenomenon possibly causing bending defect. SOLUTION: Detecting means 51, 52 are provided for detecting whether slips exist or not at the outside of a slip width in a carrying passage for the slips. When the slips are detected by the detecting means 51, 52 are determined to be defective. Detecting means 53, 54 are provided for detecting whether the slips exist or not at plural positions where the slips are arranged in the cross direction of the carrying passage. When a slip detecting timing difference between the plural positions exceeds a specified value, the slips are determined to be defective. Detecting means 61, 62, 63, 64 are provided for detecting whether the slips exist or not at the outside of the preset bending dimension of the slips in the condition that the bent slips are positioned. The slips, when detected by the detecting means 61, 62, 63, 64, are determined to be defective.
