<p>A breakaway hose coupling including two axially separable coupling portions (30, 31), which are releasably interconnected by connection means, one of the coupling portions having a housing body adapted for connection to a hose (16), the connection means being adapted for connection to one end of a flexible elongate release member (50) extending longitudinally of the hose, the opposite end of the release member being anchored to a support structure, the release member being inextensible relative to the hose and being arranged such that, in use, a pulling force applied to the hose coupling causes the hose to stretch relative to the release member so that the connection means cause release of the coupling portions when the hose has stretched relative to the release member by a maximum predetermined distance, the release member having an effective length which permits initial stretch of the hose over a first distance in response to pulling forces below a first limit of pulling forces, the first predetermined distance being less than said maximum predetermined distance, and resilient release control interposed between the release member and said housing body which accommodates pulling forces in excess of the first limit and up to a second higher limit to thereby restrict stretch of the hose within a range of distances from said first to said maximum predetermined distances.</p> |
