PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polyalkylene glycol cyclopentyl ether having high surface activity, excellent detergency, household and industrial detergents, widely useful for a solvent, a surfactant, an emulsifying agent, etc. SOLUTION: This compound is shown by the formula (R1 is H or a 1-15C alkyl; R2 is hydrogen, a 1-5C alkyl or the like; A is a lower alkylene; n is an integer of 1-30). The compound is obtained, for example, by reacting a cyclopentene compound with an alkylene glycol or a polyalkylene glycol in the presence of an acid catalyst at a room temperature to 200 deg.C under normal pressure to 20 kg/cm2 for 1-40 hours. For example, diethylene glycol monocyclopentyl ether, triethylene glycol monocyclopentyl ether, etc., may be cited as the compound. The compound is usable for various detergents and has excellent detergency in comparison with a conventional polyethylene glycol alkyl ether.
