PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head preventing magnetic flux from being leaked from an end edge of a lower shield layer and/or an upper shield layer of a read head element, and to provide a magnetic head assembly, a magnetic disk drive and a manufacturing method of the thin film magnetic head. SOLUTION: The thin film magnetic head includes at least an MR read head element having the upper and lower shield layers and an MR layer formed between the upper and the lower shield layers, wherein the upper shield layer appearing on an ABS has obtuse or round shapes at upper angle parts of ends in a track width direction.
