PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a background image separation device, capable of accurately separating an object image from a background image by forming a mask based on information for brightness of an image using a predetermined background structure. SOLUTION: This background image separation device comprises an image data generation means for radiating a background light so as to generate retroreflection more strongly reflected to the incident direction than reflected lights to directions other than the incident direction, receiving light including the reflected lights of the background light to take an image, and generating image data; and a retroreflection area specification means for specifying, from the image data, a retroreflection area reflecting the background light more strongly to the incident direction than the reflected lights to directions other than the incident direction.
