A system for demarcating an area, in particular for limiting the freedom of movement of free-roaming animals, comprises a movable demarcating element (2), and a control system (120), designed to determine the magnitude and/or the moment of a next move of the movable demarcating element (2). The system furthermore comprises observation means (100, 130, 132), wherein the observation means are designed to observe an entity near the movable demarcating element, such as a position of a dairy animal or an amount of grass in the area. The observation means (100, 130, 132) are operatively connected to the control system (120) for transmitting a signal from the observation means to the control system. The control system (120) is designed to receive and process the signal from the observation means (100, 130, 132) in order to determine the magnitude and/or the moment of the next move of the movable demarcating element (2).
