PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide new means for achieving enhanced dispersibility of a ferromagnetic powder and also enhanced durability of a magnetic layer in a magnetic recording medium.SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium comprises a magnetic layer comprising a ferromagnetic powder and a binder on a nonmagnetic support, and further comprises a compound expressed by the following general formula (1) in the magnetic layer. A coating composition for magnetic recording medium comprises a compound expressed by the following general formula (1), a ferromagnetic powder, a binder, and a solvent. In the general formula (1), X represents -O-, -S-, or -NR-; each of R and Rindependently represents a hydrogen atom or a monovalent substituent; L represents a divalent connecting group; Z represents an n-valent partial structure comprising at least one group selected from the group consisting of carboxyl groups and carboxylate groups; m represents an integer of 2 or more; and n represents an integer of 1 or more.
