<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retainer for releasably retaining the buttress material on a jaw of a surgical device. <P>SOLUTION: This invention provides a surgical stapler for deploying staples in tissue, and the surgical stapler includes: a pair of jaws for engaging tissue; a staple line buttress material positioned on one of the jaws; and a plurality of retainers passing through the staple line buttress material. In the stapler, the pair of jaws include a staple cartridge and an anvil, at least one of the jaws defining a plurality of recesses.
