A display apparatus that allows a viewer to visually recognize a virtual image, the display apparatus comprising: a display device that displays an image; and a projection optical system that projects the image displayed at the display device, wherein the projection optical system includes a first mirror and a second mirror disposed in order from a side of the display device along an optical path from the display device to a viewpoint area of the viewer, and wherein the display apparatus satisfies the following conditions (1) and (2): θx>θy   (1)0.2<D1/(T×2×tan(θh/2))<0.9   (2)where θx: an incident angle of a light ray incident on the first mirror in a longitudinal direction of a display screen of the display device, θy: an incident angle of the light ray incident on the first mirror in a crosswise direction of the display screen of the display device, D1: a distance between an image display surface of the display device and the first mirror on an optical path of a light ray that reaches a center of the viewpoint area from the display device, T: a distance from an eye of the viewer to the virtual image, and θh: an angle made by a first straight line and a second straight line, where the first straight line is a straight line connecting one end in a horizontal direction of a virtual image visually recognized by the viewer and the eye of the viewer, and the second straight line is a straight line connecting the other end in the horizontal direction of the virtual image visually recognized by the viewer and the eye of the viewer.
