The compressor has a piston installed to rectilinearly reciprocate inside a cylinder to suck/discharge a refrigerant. A linear motor provides a driving power to the piston to allow the piston to rectilinearly reciprocate. A power-supply unit (50) provides a power-supply voltage to the motor, and functions to short-circuit a part of a coil disconnected from the power-supply unit during an initial operation stage of the motor. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a linear compressor.
