A sensor element comprises a pump cell having a pump electrode (52) arranged on the surface of the element facing the gas mixture; a measuring gas electrode (50) arranged in the measuring gas region (40); and a reference electrode (51) arranged in a reference gas region. The gas mixture reaches the measuring region via a diffusion resistor (31). A further diffusion resistor (32) is arranged between the measuring and reference regions. Preferred Features: The gas component is pumped into the reference gas region through and external shell via the reference electrode. The reference gas region is connected to a gas chamber via the further diffusion resistor.
