Aspects of the present invention include directing traffic in data communications systems. In embodiments of the present invention the traffic is directed based on a Media Access Control (MAC) address table. In embodiments of the present invention traffic directed to an unknown port is blocked to all ports that are in the MAC address table.

1. A switch system in a data communications network, comprising:
a plurality of ports, each port capable of connecting an end device; a memory for storing a Media Access Control (MAC) table comprising an association of a port and a MAC address; and a processor for directing traffic between ports, the processor configured to locate a receiving port in the MAC address table and configured to unicast traffic to the receiving port if the receiving port is in the MAC address table and configured to broadcast traffic to each port absent from the MAC address table and configured to block traffic to every port included in the MAC address table.
