A process for producing a composite semipermeable membrane which is excellent in water permeability and salt rejection and is extremely reduced in the content of unreacted ingredients therein. Also provided is a composite semipermeable membrane obtained by the process. The process for composite semipermeable membrane production comprises: a step in which a skin layer comprising a polyamide resin obtained by reacting a polyfunctional amine ingredient with a polyfunctional acid halide ingredient is formed on a surface of a porous support to produce an uncleaned composite semipermeable membrane; and a step in which the uncleaned composite semipermeable membrane is brought into contact with a solution containing a water-soluble alcohol to conduct a pretreatment and then the membrane is brought into contact with pure water or ion-exchanged water to clean it.
