The method and apparatus for measuring the reactive forces developed in machine drives subject to wear and adjustment comprises a motor driven gearbox in a housing (7) in which torque transmission is via the spur wheels (1,2) from a mainshaft (5) supported in the bearings (31,32). The bearing (31) is a fixture in the housing (7), whereas the bearing (32) is located in a cup (4) which moves radially with respect to the central axis dependent on the transmitted torque and corresponding peripheral thrust (61) between the driving (1) and driven (2) wheels. The resulting displacement experienced by the cup (4) provides a bending moment in the cantilevered stem (6) anchored in the plate (8) resulting in a commensurate signal from the strain-gauge (11).
