PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a misfire detecting device for an internal combustion engine identifying a cylinder where a misfire is generated and in addition identifying the cause why the misfire is generated. SOLUTION: In the cylinder where the misfire is detected before one cycle, if the misfire is not detected in the main cycle, an air fuel ratio is checked whether it is lean or not. If the air fuel ratio is lean, a fuel system is identified abnormal, and if the air fuel ratio is not lean, an ignition system is identified abnormal, If the cause why the misfire is generated is identified, information of the cylinder where the misfire is generated and the cause why the misfire is generated are stored in a memory means 5c within an ECU 5 to finish misfire cause identifying processing.
