The invention relates to a stranding unit (2) for a stranding machine, comprising a stranding axis (VA) and a cage (8), in which a number of baskets (10) is arranged, for accommodating a number of reels (12) having strand material (14) wound thereon. The stranding unit (2) is characterized in that a stand (4) is arranged, which has a frame (6), which extends around the cage (8) in a circumferential direction (UR) about the stranding axis (VA), wherein the cage (8) is supported on the frame (6) by means of a number of frame bearing elements (26) and can be rotated about the stranding axis (VA). Because of the circumferential support, centrifugal forces are distributed, and absorbed by the frame (6), in a particularly efficient manner. In an advantageous development, a plurality of baskets (10) is also supported within the cage (8) in a similar manner. Furthermore, the stranding unit (2) is designed overall in such a way that the stranding unit can be operated at a particularly high rotational speed.
