PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a computer system for integrating a compression system with an operating system. SOLUTION: In installing a nonstandard device driver, a drive character assigned to a previously installed compression volume is reassigned in order to ensure that a predetermined character is assigned to a nonstandard device. In installing the compression system, an undetermined loading list is kept for the compression volumes incapable of being loaded yet. After installing the respective nonstandard device drivers, the undetermined loading list is checked to determine which compression volume can be loaded. When the nonstandard device driver is installed, a drive character is assigned.
