An incremental shaft encoder (12) has a shaft (14) connected with a bolt (15) of a door hinge through a flexible sleeve (18) and has housing (13) mounted on the door hinge plate (16). The encoder outputs two sinusoidal voltages that are 90 deg out of phase to a data processor which calculates the door opening angle using CORDIC algorithm.
