CATALYST CONTAINING AMPHOTERIC ORGANIC PHOSPHOROUS COMPOUND AND TRANSITION METAL COMPLEX AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURING BIARYL COMPOUND USING IT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a biaryl compound using water as a solvent which permits smooth proceeding of reaction and convenient recycle of the catalyst.

SOLUTION: A catalyst for manufacture of biaryl compounds comprises an organic phosphorous compound having a polyethylene glycol structure of formula (1): R1R2PA(CH2)n(OCH2CH2)mR3(wherein R1and R2are independently alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkoxy or aryloxy and may bind to each other to form a ring; R3is hydroxyl or lower alkoxy; A is phenylene, oxyphenylene or methylene; n is 5-30; m is 3-300) and a complex of a transition metal of the group X in the periodic table.
