Abstract An implantable electrode having an electrically conductive core covered by a stable biocompatible oxide barrier layer, where said core comprises niobium and said oxide comprises porous niobium oxide. A process of producing an implantable electrode according to the invention where a core of metal or metal alloy containing niobium is connected as anode in an electrolyte and subjected to high potential anodic pulses.
