<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a hot spot phenomenon clearly visible on a liquid crystal display panel. <P>SOLUTION: This backlight unit for a liquid crystal display element comprises a mold frame having a storage space for storing a reflecting sheet, at least one diffusion sheet, at least one prism sheet and a plurality of light emitting diodes, and a light shielding tape for affixing the reflecting sheet, prism sheet, the plurality of light emitting diodes and the diffusion sheet within the storage space and shielding light irradiated by the plurality of light emitting diodes, so as not to be reflected in an outside direction, wherein a first color is colored in a plurality of first colored areas vertically corresponding to the plurality of light emitting diodes out of the whole lower face area of the light shielding tape, and a second color different from the first color is colored in a second colored area other than the plurality of first colored areas out of the whole lower face area of the light shielding tape.
