A home network system and a modem control method for preventing waste of unnecessary power are provided to reduce power consumption by unnecessary operation of a PLC modem when transmitting media contents. A set top box(111) is connected to a display device. A media server(130) transmits the media contents through power line communication. Power line communications modems(121,122,123,124) provide a power line communications interfacing function in order for the set top box to interwork with the media server through power line communication. If a transmission confirming message is received, the power line communications modem determines whether to switch to a sleep mode.
