PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording/reproducing method which enables a recordable optical disk depending on the selection of defect management, and also provide a recording/reproducing device, an optical recording medium or the like. SOLUTION: This device executes the recording and/or reproduction of data to a recording medium. The device is provided with; a pickup which transmits data to the recording medium by radiating light; and a control part which selects a defect management mode which can switch between a defect management "ON" mode and a defect management "OFF" mode, recognizes whether the device executes defect management to the recording medium based on the selected defect management during data recording, controls the pickup, when the defect management "ON" mode is selected, to record the data to the recording medium while executing defect management to the recording medium, and also controls the pickup, when the defect management "OFF" mode is selected, to record the data to the recording medium without executing defect management.
