PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video recording and reproducing method and device which are advantageous when performing special reproduction of a large amount of continuous digital video data. SOLUTION: When a file which consists of a mass of continuous digital video data, exceeds the maximum storage capacity of a file; while the device divides the mass of the digital video data into sizes below the maximum storage capacity, records the divided digital video data separating into a plurality of files, and respectively assigns different identification data to the plurality of the files; it creates index data 44 which correspond the file identification data to the minimum unit dividing data 42 which specify the frame division of the minimum unit of the digital video data in a file in which the file identification data are assigned, and creates an index file 46 by continuously recording the index data 44 in an order of addresses on a recording region.
