The invention describes a method of making a product from a lignocellulosic material. The method comprises providing the lignocellulosic material, determining the lignin content in said lignocellulosic material, irradiating said lignocellulosic material with ionizing radiation to make lower recalcitrance level of the lignocellulosic material, and converting the irradiated lignocellulosic material, utilizing a microorganism, to produce a product selected from the group of an alcohol, organic acid, carboxylic acid, ester of carboxylic acid, salt of carboxylic acid, sugars and mixtures thereof. The dosage of ionizing radiation is set such that 0.1 to 5.0 Mrad is delivered per 1% by weight of lignin in the lignocellulosic material, which provides lowering an average molecular weight of the material by more than 10%. |
