PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-reformed carbon black which is suitable as an aqueous black ink pigment for an inkjet printer or the like; and to provide a method for producing a water dispersion of the surface-reformed carbon black. SOLUTION: In the surface-reformed carbon black, an amino group is covalently bonded to carbon black, obtained by neutralizing an acidic functional group of acidic carbon black with a basic compound. The method for producing a water dispersion of the surface-reformed carbon black includes dispersing the acidic carbon black in water, then neutralizing the acidic carbon black by adding a basic compound in the resulting dispersion, further adding an azo compound into the dispersion, and directly covalently bonding the amino group to the surface of the carbon black by heating the resulting dispersion to a temperature higher than the temperature at which the azo group is cleaved.
