PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst composition having high chemical stability for producing chlorine by catalytic gas phase oxidation by oxygen of hydrogen chloride.SOLUTION: A catalyst composition supports tin oxide as support material which is burned in the presence of oxidation gas, especially in the presence of the air at the temperature of at least 450°C, and further supports at least one kind of halogen and/or an oxygen-containing ruthenium compound as a catalyst active substance. A method for producing chlorine by catalytic gas phase oxidation by oxygen of hydrogen chloride using the catalyst composition is also provided.SELECTED DRAWING: None
