1309565 Terpolymers and tetrapolymers containing functional monomers E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 2 June 1970 [2 June 1969] 26645/70 Heading C3P Copolymers of (1) ethylene, (2) a C 3-18 alpha olefin, (3) a non-conjugated diene having only one polymerizable double bond, and (4) an unsaturated functional monomer of the formula wherein X is OR, -NR 2 , -O-CO-CR 3 , -O-CO-CF 3 , -CO-R, F, Br or Cl; Y is -COOR, -CO-NR 2 , -CN, -SO 2 Cl, or where R is hydrogen or a C 1-18 alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl group; Z is either X or Y; T is hydrogen, -OH, halogen or a C 1-18 alkyl or alkoxy group; m an integer from 2-20; and n is zero or an integer from 1-20: and copolymers of (1) ethylene, (2) a C 3-18 alpha olefin, and (3) an unsaturated functional monomer of the formula wherein n, m and R are as defined above; R 1 is R or OR; A is -OH, -NH 2 , or -COR; and B is -OH, -NH 2 or -SO 2 Cl; are prepared by contacting the monomers in an inert solvent at - 20 to +125‹ C. and a pressure of up to 10,000 p.s.i.g. in the presence of: (1) a vanadium compound in which the vanadium is in an oxidation state of at least +3; (2) an aluminium alkyl or -aryl or an aryl- or alkyl aluminium chloride or bromide; (3) a catalyst reactivator which is an organic compound having at least one carbon atom substituted by 3 chlorine or bromine atoms, the initial molar concn. of (2) being at least equal to that of the oxygen- and nitrogen-containing functional groups of the monomer, and the initial molar concn. of (3) being at least equal to that of (1). The preferred C 3-18 alpha olefin and non-conjugated dienes are propylene and 1,4-hexadiene respectively, and the preferred unsaturated functional monomers are: 2 - benzoyl - 5 - norbornene, 2 - trifluoroacetylmethyl - 5 - norbornene, 2 - hydroxy - 5 - norbornene, 2 - aminomethyl - 5 - norbornene, 2 - allylphenol, 2 - methoxy - 4 - allylphenol, 2 - cyano - 5 - norbornene, 5 - norbornene - 2- acetic acid, allyl sulfonyl chloride, 2-hydroxymethyl - 5 - norbornene, 5 - hexene - 1 - ol, 10-undecanoic acid, and 4-vinylpyridine.
