Optical fibres 4 and 5, one acting as a light projector and the other as a light receiver provide a visual indication at a remote location e.g. a motor vehicle dashboard of the state of the battery, and are fitted into bores chamfered to 45 degrees at their ends so as to pass projected light between those ends and through two columnar coloured transparent floats 1, 3 made of methyl methacrylate, A plate float 2 also of methacrylate normally abuts shoulders 18. In operation, when the state of charge is reduced, the float 1 sinks until the projected light passing between fibres 4, 5 passes also through the yellow section of the float. When the battery is fully charged the light passes through the green section of the float and when fully discharged both floats 1 and 2, Fig. 4 sink to indicate red. When the electrolyte level falls the floats are as in Fig. 5 and the blue of the always buoyant float 3 predominates. More than three S. G. states may be indicated by using more floats, and thin glass discs bonded to the base of 1 and 2 may be ground away to adjust the S. G. of each float. |
