Steam reforming of hydrocarbons to natural gas substitutes - in presence of coke oven or town gas

hydrocarbons are subjected to steam-reforming over a suitable catalyst subsequently methanised, coke over gas or town gas being mixed with the hydrocarbon before the addn of steam. The reformate steam prodt. is methanised in >=1 step, and after removing the steam, opt. methanised in >=1 further step. The mixt. of hydrocarbon and gas is pref. hydro-desulphurised, before adding steam and reforming, using a Co/Mo catalyst. Pref. 0.1-5 (0.3-0.6) kg hydrocarbon is used per Nm3 coke oven gas. Since the gas added is rich in H2 and low in CO and CO2, the number of methanising steps required is reduced and the CO2 in the prodt. is converted into useful gas, without the need for removal by washing. Economic use is made of available coke oven gas which cannot be fed directly into the natural gas network.
