Cmpds. (I) are new: (where Y is H, OH, 1-4C alkyl or 1-4C alkoxy; and X is H, halogen or CH3; pref. at least one of X and Y being other than H). This is a Division of 2,244,257. Antivirals and antitumour and anticancer agents. 2,2'-Cyclocytidine (1.0 g) is dissolved (heating) in glacial acetic acid (150 ml) and the soln. is heated 3 hrs. at reflux while water is removed, then let stand overnight in a refrigerator. (I; X=Y=M) (5'-acetyl-2,2'-cyclocytidine) hydrochloride (0.46 g) is precipitated in the form of prismatic crystals, m.pt. 275 degrees or more.
