The system for handling refuse or garbage, typically domestic rubbish, is constructed such that the refuse passes through a centripetal air separator (5), where it is split into a heavy fraction and a light fraction before passing into the fine comminuting (14) and drying (12) stages. The garbage separation of the heavy fraction includes a slinger/roller air separator and a magnetic belt. Stems such as bottles, sticks and stones are converted to a truck (11). The dried fine refuse, which is normally mainly of vegetable composition, is passed forward to a briquetting plant (13). Metallic components accumulate mostly in a collecting vessel (9).
