The composition containing a halogen-containing resin contains, in an amount sufficient for stabilisation, a mixture of (1) from 2 to 96% by weight of a compound of the formula <IMAGE> and (2) from 4 to 98% by weight of a compound of the formula CH3-Sn[S(CH2)nCoOR3]3. The mixture contains less than 0.6% by weight of a compound of the formula <IMAGE>, based on the amount of the stabiliser, as an impurity. R3 in all the formulae is a hydrocarbon radical having up to 20 carbon atoms, and n is an integer from 1 to 3. The halogen-containing resin may be: a chlorinated polyethylene, a vinyl halide resin, preferably a vinyl chloride resin, or a vinylidene halide resin. The composition preferably contains the stabiliser in an amount of from 0.1 to 5% by weight, in particular in an amount of about 2% by weight, based on the amount of the resin. The composition of the stabiliser mixture is, for example, from 71 to 81% by weight of (1) and from 19 to 29% by weight of (2). The amount of trimethyltin compound in the stabiliser should not be more than 0.6% by weight, in particular not more than 0.4% by weight, based on the amount of stabiliser. The stabiliser exhibits an LD50 of at least 695 on oral administration to rats. |
