Hydrotreating heavy hydrocarbon(s) - using catalyst comprising molybdenum and chromium on macroporous alumina

Hydrotreatment of heavy hydrocarbon feeds to reduce their meta, asphaltene, N and S content is carried out using a catalyst comprising Mo and Cr (in metallic, oxide and/or sulphide form) on a catalytically active macroporous alumina. The catalyst contains 5-15 wt.% Mo (calcd. as MoO3) and 5-20 wt.% Cr (calcd. as Cr2O3) and has a pore vol. of 0.4-0.8 cc/g, a specific surface of 150-300m2/g and an av. pore dia. of 10-20nm. The catalysts give higher demetallation levels and asphaltene conversions than commercial CoO/MoO3 catalysts.
