The process comprises contacting the water with a biomass fixed on an inert support followed by sepn. of the purified water from the sludge in a decanter. Prior to or simultaneously with the contacting, the water is mixed with hydrogen peroxide which furnishes all or the major part of the oxygen necessary for the degradation of organic materials and the cellular synthesis. Because of its greater solubility compared with oxygen gas, the H2O2 results in an increase in the thickness of the biological layer and therefore the purificn. capacity of the biomass.
