The locking mechanism is intended for closing the downwardly hingeable side and tail gates (6,7) of a transport vehicle and is arranged on the corner post (2) where these gates meet. It comprises a base plate (3) which is fixed to the post and carries a rotatable closure member (4,16) which retains a locking bolt (5,9) fixed (8) to each of the gates. The member (4) is disc-shaped and rotatable by a handle such that it locks one or the other or both bolts (9). The base plate (3,19) pref. has two slots (17,18) capable of receiving the respective bolts (9) which bolts are parallel to the respective gate hinge pivot axes.
